Bath & Body Works

Explore 689 Bath & Body Works fragrances — notes, longevity, sillage and community ratings, matched to how you want to smell. The house dates from 1990, founded by Les Wexner.

About the house

Bath & Body Works launched in 1990 in New Albany, Ohio, as the beauty line for Express, Inc. The retail group around it began with The Limited, which Les Wexner opened in 1963 in Upper Arlington, Ohio. By 1997 the chain had become the largest bath shop chain in the United States.

The corporate name moved several times. Limited Brands bought the home fragrance maker Slatkin & Company in 2005, and after the 2007 sale of The Limited the parent became L Brands. Wexner announced in February 2020 that he would step down, and Bath & Body Works CEO Andrew Meslow took over as CEO of L Brands. With the 2021 spin-off of Victoria's Secret, the company renamed itself Bath & Body Works, Inc. It is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and the shops are now its only brand, since La Senza was sold in January 2019.

A few sources name the perfumers behind the best-known scents. Cucumber Melon, introduced in 1998, is credited by the Fragrance Foundation to Kari Arienti of Givaudan, and it entered the Fragrance Hall of Fame in 2018. Harry Fremont, formerly of Firmenich, created Japanese Cherry Blossom and has said he was maybe one of the first fine fragrance perfumers to work for the company. He describes it as having a very clean, out-of-the-shower feeling. The company says it has passed $1.5 billion in lifetime sales, and Glossy places the launch in 2006, as a flanker of a 2005 Cherry Blossom. For the 2026 anniversary flanker Forever Cherry Blossom, the perfumers named are Patty Hidalgo and Natasha Côté-Mouzannar of IFF.

Angela at Now Smell This wrote in 2009 of a mall world of plastic bottles and fruity lotions, called Warm Vanilla Sugar vanillic cotton candy doused in white musk, and said Sweet Pea smells like it came from the laboratory.
