About the house
Maison Francis Kurkdjian was co-founded in 2009 in Paris by the perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and his longtime friend Marc Chaya. Accounts of where it started differ. LVMH names the first boutique as being on Rue d'Alger, while other sources place the founding near Place Vendôme.
Kurkdjian was born in Paris in 1969. He has created more than 40 fragrances for major brands. In 2021 he also became creative director of Parfums Christian Dior.
The house's best-known commission came from outside. Baccarat asked for a fragrance to celebrate the crystal maker's 250th anniversary, and that became Baccarat Rouge 540. Sources differ on whether it dates to 2014 or 2015. According to Lampoon and W Magazine, a Neiman Marcus beauty executive suggested a department store release.
The house sits in LVMH's Perfumes & Cosmetics division with Acqua di Parma, Givenchy Parfums and Loewe Perfumes. After the deal Chaya stayed as CEO and Kurkdjian as creative director, and both remained shareholders. In the announcement Chaya said the house shared "the same spirit of creativity, excellence and entrepreneurial drive as the LVMH Group."
LVMH's own description says the house steers by purity, sophistication and the boldness of a reinvented classicism. It also lists a Perfumer's Garden at the Trianon estate in Versailles, open since 2023.
