Black Oud opens with a resinous slap of leather and pine that feels like walking into a dim lounge where the air is thick with polished wood and expensive smoke. Labdanum threads through the top, sticky and golden, pulling the pine away from anything fresh and steering it toward something dense and deliberate. Cedar and violet sit at the center, the floral note softening the wood without making it sweet, while gurjan balsam adds a warm, almost medicinal resin that deepens the texture. The base settles into amber and musk, round and heavy, with labdanum returning to tie the opening to the drydown. Animalic and powdery accords give it a slightly unwashed edge that some will find seductive and others will find off-putting. It is a fragrance built for low light and close quarters, the kind of scent that matches a room where conversations happen in low voices and the music never gets bright.
House of Perfumes keeps the composition straightforward, but the animalic accord is not subtle. It carries a rawness that can read as dirty rather than luxurious, and that will limit who reaches for it. The powdery drydown also risks feeling dated to those who prefer clean, modern woods.
