Patricia de Nicolai’s Eau de Yuzu opens with a bright, almost abrasive snap of citrus that smells less like bottled fruit and more like the actual scratch of a lemon leaf against your wrist. The yuzu is tart and fleeting, quickly joined by a sharp grapefruit that feels like the top was bitten rather than sliced. Juniper adds a faintly peppery greenness, but the magic happens when the guaiac wood and patchouli creep in from the base, warming the whole affair into something like a piece of sun-bleached driftwood curled around a freshly peeled rind. It’s a crisp, aromatic eau with a clean, natural finish, never synthetic or cloying. The overall image is that of a cold splash of mineral water on a humid afternoon, refreshing yet determined to evaporate before you can properly admire it.
That evaporation is the catch, of course. Longevity is barely over three hours on most skin, and sillage hovers close enough to be called a whisper. For a citrus fragrance, that’s almost expected, but at this price point, it stings a little. The scent itself suits a gardener who runs errands in the late morning and wants to smell like the underside of a leaf rather than a fruit salad. Skip it if you demand projection or a full day’s wear. Wear it on the hottest days of summer, preferably by the sea, where its brief life matches the fleeting pleasure of a sea breeze that comes and goes before you can catch it. That fleeting nature is the point, but it also holds the fragrance back from being truly memorable.
