Our take

The velvet curtain of a small gallery has just been drawn back, letting in a gust of cold air that carries the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves. Inside, a woman stands near a sculpture, cradling a glass that holds a sharp pour of tequila and crushed blackberry. The drink's bite is immediate, brightened by a sparkle of aldehydes and the prickly heat of pink pepper that catches in the nose like static.

As she moves through the room, the sharp edge of the fruit softens into a dense bouquet. Rose and peony rise first, followed by the clean white lines of lily-of-the-valley and orange blossom. Jasmine adds a creamy weight, while angelica and saffron twist through the petals, giving the flowers a slightly bitter, aromatic stem that keeps the air from becoming too pretty.

The warmth of the gallery's old wood stove begins to melt the floral frost. Fir resin and cedar release a dry, forest floor scent that mixes with the sweet, heavy smoke of tobacco. Vanilla and tonka bean provide a gourmand comfort, smoothed out by sandalwood and a generous layer of musk that settles into the wool of her coat.

Amber glows beneath the surface, holding the entire scene together. The air smells of vanilla, tobacco, and rose.
