Our take

Frank Boclet’s Incense opens with a peppery slap of cardamom and pink pepper, warm and sharp, like a spice merchant’s hands rubbing cinnamon bark. That initial crackle settles quickly into a plush, almost syrupy benzoin heart, smooth as polished amber. The base trio of ebony, sandalwood, and guaiac wood dries down to a creamy, slightly smoky woodiness, but never fully catches fire. Where you might expect cathedral-grade resinous smoke, you get a polite, gentlemanly warmth that leans more toward a woody oriental than an actual incense burner.

The overall character is a well-mannered scarf scent: think a carved ebony box lined with sandalwood, dusted with pepper, sitting in a clean, dry room. It feels natural enough in its spices and woods, but the composition is squarely niche-lite, polished for mass appeal rather than daring exploration. The numbers tell the truth: longevity is short (a solid three to four hours on skin) and sillage is a whisper, close to the chest. This is not a fragrance that announces itself; it’s one you wear for yourself, not for the room.

It suits the man who wants a warm, spicy wood for autumn and winter, perfect for office or a quiet dinner, especially in the evening when its gentle projection feels intimate. Skip it if you crave smoky, tenacious incense or anything that lasts through a workday. After all, why pay for incense that burns out before the first log on the fire?
