Our take

The opening of OUD by Franck Boclet hits with a warm, prickly blast of ginger and cumin that feels like stepping into a spice market just as the sun starts to burn off the morning fog. There’s a floral sweetness from carnation that softens that initial sharpness, but this is a fragrance that never pretends to be polite. As it settles, the heart reveals itself as a single, unflinching note of agarwood, not the barnyard monster of some niche oils but a cleaner, more transparent oud that lets the spices linger around its edges like smoke around a lantern. The drydown brings cedar and patchouli to the foreground, earthy and slightly dusty, with the oud retreating into a supporting role. The overall character is that of an old leather journal found in a cedar chest, the pages infused with dried spices and the faint memory of incense. It feels natural but not raw, leaning more toward the accessible end of niche without crossing into mainstream blandness. The longevity and sillage are middling, which is the honest weakness here, it fades to a skin scent after a few hours, so you will need to reapply if you want presence. This suits someone who wants a woody oriental that is easy to wear in cooler months, especially fall and winter, for both day and night. Skip it if you crave beast mode projection or prefer the sweeter, boozy side of oud. Wear it with a wool coat and a quiet confidence.
