Our take

New Baby opens with a puff of clean, unapologetically synthetic powder that smells less like an actual infant and more like the memory of a freshly changed diaper, the talc still clinging to warm skin. This is Demeter doing what Demeter does: capturing a single, hyperliteral snapshot of a moment, and here the moment is that crisp, almost sterile sweetness of baby wipes, milky lotion, and something faintly plasticky, like a new rattle straight out of the box. The development is virtually nonexistent, a flat line of soft, airy vanillin and laundry musk that stays close and whispers rather than projects. On dry down, it settles into a barely-there whisper of clean cotton and soured milk, the synthetic edges rounding into a powdery, skin-like haze that feels more nostalgic than natural.

The whole thing is a single pressed-powder puff dropped into a bowl of warm, diluted formula. It is sweet without being cloying, fresh in that chemical, “just out of the dryer” way, and utterly synthetic. It wears like a memory rather than a perfume, and given the longevity barely cresting two hours and a sillage that hovers at a polite arm’s length, that memory fades fast. Who is this for? Someone who wants to smell like a freshly bathed baby, for exactly one errand or a quick hug, someone who does not mind reapplying every ninety minutes. Skip it if you crave complexity, depth, or any kind of narrative shift. Wear it in spring on a lazy Sunday morning, or in summer after a shower, when the heat will coax out that last wisp of powder before it dissolves into the afternoon. It is a fragrance made for the first five minutes of a visit with a newborn, before reality sets in, and that is exactly what it delivers.
