Our take

Proserphina opens with a tart, almost sour pomegranate that feels less like juice and more like the skin of the fruit, astringent and green. The rhubarb and lemon cut through immediately, while aldehydes lend a strange, fizzy brightness that recalls a glass of something sparkling left out overnight. Within minutes, the herbs and chamomile creep in, softening the edges into something more contemplative. The rose and ylang-ylang never fully bloom; they are smothered under a heavy blanket of oakmoss, patchouli, and labdanum, turning what could be a floral romp into a damp, woody amble through a forest floor after autumn rain. The dry down is where this fragrance finds its bone: a resinous, balsamic blend of styrax, tolu, and tonka, with guaiac wood providing a smoky, almost leathery backbone. Sandalwood adds a creamy whisper, but the overall texture remains dry and powdery, like crumbling a dried fig into a pile of fallen leaves.

This is a perfume built for a specific kind of melancholy. The image that sticks is a woman in a heavy wool coat, standing at the edge of a vineyard during grape harvest, the air thick with rotting fruit, wet earth, and distant bonfire smoke. It feels natural, almost too natural. Bertrand Duchaufour has crafted something that smells like a memory of a place rather than a product, which is both its triumph and its trap.

Sillage is shy, barely more than a whisper. Longevity hovers around three to four hours before retreating to a skin scent. It is a niche composition through and through, but one that refuses to perform. Who should wear it? Anyone who prefers their scents intimate, who finds joy in smelling their own wrist throughout the day rather than broadcasting to a room. Skip it if you want projection or sweetness. The pomegranate and rose promise a fruity floral, but the fragrance never delivers on that promise. It is a fall-only affair, best worn on a cool, grey afternoon when you want to smell like the season itself. For a night out, it will get lost. For a quiet walk in the woods, it is perfect.
