Our take

Scent by CoSTUME NATIONAL opens with a brisk slap of bergamot and green tea, the cardamom adding a nervous, spicy crackle that suggests a woman straightening her jacket before stepping into a boardroom. The heart unfolds a jammy jasmine sambac and a rose that’s been bruised, not powdered, with hibiscus lending a tart, almost boozy shimmer. Then the base drags it all down into a leather armchair stained with ambergris, vanilla, and patchouli, but here’s the problem: the whole affair evaporates faster than a lunch break. Longevity clocks in at a measly 3.28, sillage barely a whisper at 2.77, so you’re left reapplying like a madwoman. The overall character is a floral animalic ghost: a forgotten silk scarf still warm from a body that’s already left the room. It feels natural enough in its opening, synthetic in its airy base, and sits squarely in the niche-fringe of early 2000s oriental florals. Who should wear it? The person who loves a dirty floral but values intimacy over projection, someone who wants their fragrance to be a secret handshake rather than a megaphone. Skip it if you demand beast mode longevity or want something for a winter night out. Wear it for a spring afternoon in a sunlit café, or a fall day when the air is crisp enough to cradle its soft, animalic fade. Is it worth chasing the ghost? Only if you’re patient.
