Our take

Michel Germain’s Sexual opens with a juicy, sun-warmed burst of apricot and clementine, the honeysuckle and osmanthus adding a honeyed, almost jammy sweetness that feels less like seduction and more like a picnic basket left out in the August heat. The heart is a dense bouquet of white florals — gardenia, jasmine, freesia — with a creamy water lily that softens the edges, while the rose stays shy, barely peeking through. Then the base brings in a dusty, comforting warmth: myrrh and sandalwood cradle a pinch of cinnamon and a dollop of vanilla, with neroli adding a bitter, citrusy flicker that keeps it from tipping into straight-up dessert. The overall impression is of a velvet chaise lounge in a conservatory at dusk — lush, slightly powdered, and wilting just a little at the edges. Sophia Grojsman’s 1994 creation is unmistakably of its era, a sweet, lactonic oriental floral that wears its femininity like heavy lipstick. The longevity and sillage are moderate at best, fading to a soft skin scent after a few hours, which might frustrate those expecting the name to deliver a bold statement. It suits someone who wants a cozy, romantic fragrance for cool fall evenings or crisp winter afternoons — think cashmere scarves and candlelight. Those who prefer crisp, modern minimalism or bright, airy scents should skip it; this one clings like a velvet whisper you have to lean in to hear.
