Joyeux Été can feel a little severe when first applied. The galbanum and marigold hit with a sharp, resinous bite that borders on medicinal, and the opening minutes demand patience from anyone expecting an easy, sunny welcome.
Once that edge softens, the heart reveals a dense garden of lily-of-the-valley, rose, jasmine, narcissus, and orchid, all anchored by a pronounced orris that gives the flowers a cool, powdered veil. The base pulls the composition into deeper territory with oakmoss, benzoin, tonka bean, cedar, and musk, creating a green, balsamic chypre that feels at home in a dim room with heavy curtains and a glass of something warm. It is aromatic and earthy rather than bright, offering a sophisticated, old-world personality that stands apart from modern fruity releases.
That initial austerity remains the price of admission. If you prefer a fragrance that smiles from the very first spray, this Lancôme classic may never quite win you over, because its stern opening is part of its identity.
