Our take

Is this the oud you reach for when you want weight without sweetness? Samarkand answers with a dense, resinous blend built around Indian oud and frankincense. The oud here is dark and woody, while the frankincense adds a dry, churchy air that keeps the composition from leaning gourmand. Turkish rose appears, but it is stripped of its pretty facets and pressed into the resin, lending a dusty floral edge rather than a romantic heart. Amber and patchouli round out the texture, giving the scent a slightly earthy, cracked-soil feel that suits cooler weather and evening wear.

The result is unapologetically masculine and leans traditional. It smells like a carved wooden chest in an old market, not a glass counter in a modern mall. The materials read natural rather than polished, which gives Samarkand character but also a certain roughness. It is not a crowd-pleaser or a safe blind buy, and it does not try to be. Those who prefer clean, transparent scents will find this far too heavy and opaque for their taste.

The limitation here is the balance. The frankincense and oud dominate so completely that the rose and amber barely register as distinct notes. The blend can feel one-dimensional after the first hour, lacking the movement that keeps a fragrance interesting. It is a singular mood, executed with focus, but it offers little beyond that initial impression.
