Our take

Exclusif Tabac opens with a curious brightness, osmanthus and ginger flirting with a bitter edge of artemisia before the soiled sweetness of tobacco and patchouli takes over. This is not a shy fragrance. The guaiac wood and vetiver anchor it in something dark and rooty, while the tonka bean wraps everything in a dusty, vanillic warmth that clings to fabric like worn wool. The overall effect is of a vintage tobacco humidor left open in a room where someone has been smoking cloves, the leather chairs still holding the heat of an evening long ended.

It feels more synthetic than natural, but not cheaply so. This is a fragrance built for nights in late autumn and deep winter, and the numbers confirm it. 100 percent winter approval and 92 percent fall tell you where it belongs, though it will suffocate in summer heat as surely as a wool coat. Sillage sits politely below 3.6, meaning you won’t announce your arrival from three tables away, and longevity hovers under four hours on skin, though it lasts longer on clothes. You will need to respray if you want it to survive a full evening out.

Who should wear it? The man who wants a tobacco scent without the heavy boozy sweetness of the classic reference. Who should skip it? Anyone who expects a photorealistic leaf or a performance beast at this price point. This is a solid, affordable player for cool nights, a February dinner, a late walk home when the air smells of rain and chimney smoke. Just don’t expect it to roar.
