La Promesse
Fragrance notes
Character
La Promesse opens with a sharp bite of grapefruit and pine that feels like walking into a forest just after rain. The eucalyptus adds a cool, medicinal edge that keeps the citrus from leaning sweet. Fir sits underneath, giving the first minutes a resinous green character that smells natural rather than polished.
As the scent develops, fir resin brings a sticky, sap-like warmth that bridges the gap between the bright opening and the heavier base. The transition feels smooth, with the green notes slowly giving way to something darker and more textured.
Leather and suede arrive with a dry, slightly animalic presence that grounds the entire composition. Vetiver adds an earthy, rooty depth that keeps the leather from feeling too smooth. The result is woody, aromatic, and quietly smoky without ever becoming harsh.
Sonia Constant composed a fragrance that stays true to its conifer and leather theme from start to finish. The materials smell more rugged than refined, which gives it a distinct personality. The one limitation is that the suede can read a bit synthetic against the natural pine, creating a slight disconnect in an otherwise cohesive scent.
