Our take

Oud Deneii asks a lot before it gives much back. The opening is a sharp, medicinal hit of licorice and anise that feels abrasive rather than inviting, and it takes patience to wait out that prickly start. This is not a fragrance that rolls out a red carpet for the wearer. You have to accept that the first few minutes will feel challenging, even off-putting, because the spice is loud and unpolished.

Once that initial edge softens, the argument for wearing it becomes clear. The heart brings tobacco and violet together, creating a soft spicy and aromatic core that feels dusty and refined. The tobacco is dry, supported by the violet rather than sweetened by it. In the base, celery and mate add a green, balsamic bitterness that keeps the sweetness of the coumarin and ambergris from becoming a comfort scent. It is woody and musky, but the geranium and liatris twist those familiar notes into something that smells more like a damp forest floor than a warm blanket.

Maison Incens has built something for the person who finds most designer tobacco scents too sugary and predictable. The anis accord runs deep here, tying the top to the balsamic base in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental. It suits cool evenings where a drink in hand and a leather jacket are involved, because the scent carries a serious, almost somber weight. It asks for a wearer who enjoys that
