Our take

Somnus is built for the person who wants a spice rack without the heat. The opening hits with bergamot and mandarin orange, but the citrus is immediately pushed aside by black pepper and pink pepper. Elemi adds a resinous edge that keeps the brightness from feeling like a standard summer splash. This is not a scent that tries to refresh you. It wants to wrap you in a cloud of cardamom, nutmeg, and ginger, creating a warm, aromatic shield that feels deliberate and composed.

The heart introduces orange blossom and rose, but they do not turn the blend floral. They sit underneath the spice, giving the ginger and cardamom a powdery, slightly balsamic texture that feels soft rather than sharp. As it moves toward the base, sandalwood and cedar provide a dry woodiness, while vetiver and oak add an earthy depth. Tonka bean offers a hint of sweetness, though the musk and peppery top notes ensure it never becomes a gourmand treat.

Composed by David Chieze, this 2024 release finds its home in the quiet of a dimly lit room where the air is cool. It suits a night out in the city when the sidewalk is busy and the sky is dark, or an evening indoors where the only light comes from a low lamp. The mix of warm spicy and woody accords creates a sophisticated barrier against the outside world, inviting closeness while maintaining a distinct, spicy distance that keeps the wearer centered in the moment.
