Our take

Femme Rochas 2013 opens like a bruised peach dropped into a bowl of dark plums, sweet but with a sharp tug of bergamot that keeps it from tipping into syrupy. The entrance is almost too generous, a fruity flash that promises more than it delivers. But then the cumin arrives, dusty and warm, and the whole thing shifts. This isn’t a clean rose, it’s a rose that’s been slept in, petals crushed against jasmine and a faint animalic hum that feels more accidental than intentional. Olivier Cresp knows how to make a fragrance unsettle you gently.

The dry down reveals oakmoss and patchouli, green and earthy, with vanilla softening the edges into something powdery but never innocent. The overall picture is a rumpled silk scarf left on a worn leather chair, elegant but slightly soiled. It’s a unisex composition that leans feminine by convention, but the cumin and moss give it a stubborn, unshowered intimacy that feels honest. Longevity and sillage are moderate, as the numbers suggest, which is the real weakness here. You get a solid four hours before it retreats to a skin scent. Best for spring evenings or crisp fall afternoons, when the warmth can breathe. Skip it if you want a pristine floral or a beast mode projector. This one rewards the person who leans in close.
