Our take

Noisette Iris opens with Turkish rose and roasted coffee beans, softened by a pinprick of pink pepper. The rose feels plush rather than dewy, and the coffee smells like grounds just after brewing, dry and slightly bitter. Hazelnut and orris take over quickly, turning the scent powdery and round. Peach blossom adds a faint juicy lift, while black currant gives a tart edge that keeps the nuts from feeling too heavy. The orris here is rooty and cool, not the cold starch of older iris scents, and it binds the nutty heart to the floral top without losing its own shape.

Vanilla and labdanum form a warm base that moves slowly. Musk smooths the edges, and patchouli adds a dark, earthy thread that grounds the sweetness. The hazelnut lingers through the drydown, so the fragrance never becomes a simple vanilla musk. The scent stays near the body as it develops, and the base notes unfold gradually rather than rushing outward. The materials feel composed to sit close and persist through a coat or a scarf in crisp air and low light.

Luca Maffei composed this for Jul et Mad Paris in 2022. The formula is undeniably pretty, but the roasted coffee and pink pepper are so muted that they nearly disappear after the first few minutes. What remains is elegant and cohesive, yet the promised contrast between bitter coffee and powdery iris never fully arrives.
