Tabac Grande
Fragrance notes
Character
Tabac Grande opens like a brown study lit by a single gas lamp. The tobacco is not cured and sweet in the modern sense, it is a deep, fermented leaf wrapped around singed cognac and a splash of bitter coffee. Saffron flicks its metallic edge against the powdery hawthorn, and for a moment you are in a dusty apothecary, not a fragrance counter. The heart is where the real trouble begins: a rich cacao and tonka haze bumping against jasmine and osmanthus that feel almost preserved, like dried flowers caught in amber. The rose and heliotrope soften the blow, but make no mistake, this is a lush, dense center.
The dry down is the star, a massive ambered animalic base where the oud sits quietly beneath castoreum, civet, and hyrax. It is a barn warmed by vanilla and immortelle, a scent that clings to the skin like a wool coat after a bonfire. The whole composition feels like an old leather armchair that has absorbed decades of pipe smoke, spilled brandy, and the faint musk of its previous occupant. It is rich, natural, and unapologetically niche, a true attar with the weight to match.
Longevity is excellent at over eight hours, but the sillage stays intimate, it wraps you rather than announces you. This is a cold weather scent through and through, perfect for a November evening or a winter solstice gathering. It suits someone who does not mind smelling complicated, even a little feral. If you prefer clean scents or shy away from animalic notes, skip it entirely. For everyone else, this is the smoking jacket you never knew you needed. 🍂
