Our take

Cairo (Chair de Deesse) opens with a blast of aldehydes that feel like a cashmere scarf thrown over a hot radiator. It settles into a dense, slightly dusty floral heart, all bruised hyacinth and powdery iris, before drying down to a resinous amber base that clings to the skin like dried honey on a marble countertop. This is an Oriental from the 1960s, unapologetically deep and sweet in a way that today’s fruity florals would call rude. The overall character is a freshly powdered woman stepping out of a vintage Rolls Royce in the middle of an Egyptian heatwave, a little regal, a little sweaty, all glamour.

The sillage is a polite but firm arm’s length, and longevity stretches a full workday plus dinner, which is admirable for a fragrance this airy at heart. It wears synthetic in the best way, a bold amber that never pretends to be nature.

Skip this if you prefer sharp citrus or sheer musks. This is for the woman who loves a chypre with backbone, who wants to smell like velvet curtains in a dimly lit bar. Wear it on a crisp autumn evening or a cool summer night, at a jazz club or a black tie dinner where you intend to be the most memorable thing in the room. It’s not a daily driver, but it’s a hell of a destination.
