Our take

Faris Al Arab opens with a sticky, near-liqueur sweetness: cherry liqueur and vanilla blotting out any air, cashmere wood adding a plush synthetic warmth that feels less like nature and more like a freshly upholstered passenger seat. That initial blast is loud, almost cloying, before the heart pulls in amber and sugar cane, turning the whole affair into a candied cedarwood that hums with labdanum’s resinous glow. By the dry down, tonka and sandalwood smooth the edges into a powder-soft musk, but the sweetness never fully retreats. This is a fragrance that wears like a glass of mulled wine spilled across a velvet smoking jacket: rich, deep, and just shy of overwrought. The sillage sits modestly close and longevity hovers around moderate, which is a mercy given how syrupy it can get in warmer weather. It’s clearly a cold-weather beast, built for autumn and winter nights. The rating suggests many love it, and I understand why: it’s accessible, wearable, and confidently sweet without tipping into bargain-bin gourmand territory. But it leans synthetic in its sugary amber core, and anyone who prefers airy, naturalistic scents should steer clear. This is for the guy who wants to smell like a dessert cart at a black-tie dinner, preferably after sunset and with a stiff drink in hand.
