Our take

Shocking opens with a slap of aldehydes sharp as a champagne cork, then the tarragon and bergamot twist it into something green and nervy. The heart is a sticky tangle of white honey and yellow florals, narcissus and ylang ylang wrestling with jasmine and rose, all powdered over with a layer of vintage dust. On the drydown, civetta and musk take over, pushing through the amber and patchouli with a warm, animalic hum that lingers close to the skin.

This is a fur coat left in a club at 3 a.m., still holding the ghost of cigarettes and someone else’s wrist. It feels heavy, opulent, and unmistakably synthetic in that glorious pre-modern way, like a couture gown that smells of itself rather than nature. The sillage is moderate, the longevity decent for an old-school floral oriental, though the aldehydes can feel screechy if you overspray. Who wears this? Someone who loves a full-bore vintage statement, who wants to smell expensive and slightly transgressive. Skip it if you prefer clean laundry or anything that whispers rather than announces. Best in cold weather, because winter and fall make its warmth feel deliberate, and it works best at dusk or after dark, when the powdery musk has room to breathe. Is there a modern perfume that dares to be this unapologetically strange?
