Empress by Sean John opens with a sharp, almost sour burst of lime and star fruit, that tart cranberry tang riding just underneath. It feels like a glass of tropical punch poured over crushed ice, bright and eager. The heart quickly softens into a fluffy heap of raspberry and peony, with cardamom adding a faint spicy flicker that keeps things from turning into straight candy. But make no mistake, this is a synthetic fruity floral through and through, the kind that glows neon pink under department store lights before fading into a powdery caramel vanilla base with a whisper of sandalwood. The ambrette gives it a slightly fuzzy, musky edge, like the static on a radio station you can barely tune in.
The problem is that tuning is brief. Longevity clocks in at a measly 2.75 out of 5, and sillage barely clears arm’s length.
