Dark Vanilla by Secrets Door opens with a noticeable synthetic edge. The elemi note feels sharp and plastic at first, lacking the resinous depth found in more expensive compositions. This artificial quality lingers through the early stages and prevents the scent from feeling entirely natural.
The heart brings dark chocolate and vanilla together. The chocolate is rich and bitter, while the vanilla adds a soft sweetness. As the fragrance develops, the vanilla in the base grows heavier. Tonka bean reinforces the sugary character, and gaiac wood provides a dry, smoky foundation beneath the sugar.
The soy sauce note is subtle but distinct. It adds a salty, fermented depth that keeps the sweetness from becoming flat. This accord creates a warm, amber-heavy atmosphere suited to cold nights and dimly lit rooms. The powdery finish sits close to the skin, emphasizing the cozy texture over fresh air.
The synthetic opening remains the weakest part of the experience. While the dry down offers an interesting mix of gourmand and woody elements, the initial plastic impression is hard to ignore. Those sensitive to artificial-smelling resins may find the start unpleasant, even as the richer base notes try to smooth the edges.
