Our take

Vanité by Maison Dahlawi asks a lot before it gives much back. The opening citrus hits with a sharp, almost abrasive brightness that can feel thin and screechy if you expect immediate comfort. Mandarin orange, lemon, and bergamot arrive loud and unpolished, demanding patience rather than offering a gentle welcome.

Once that initial edge settles, the fragrance reveals its true argument. It is built for the person who enjoys the ritual of watching a scent evolve. A dense wall of warm spice takes over, where Ceylon cinnamon, cloves, and pink pepper tangle with saffron and cardamom. It creates a rich, aromatic heat that feels heavy on the skin, supported by a labdanum and amberwood base that adds resinous depth.

This is a scent for a quiet, dimly lit room when the air outside is cold and the night feels long. The vanilla and cedar provide a smooth landing for the spices, but the overall impression remains intense and serious. It suits someone who wears fragrance for their own enjoyment in close quarters, preferring a complex, woody, and musky aura over a crowd-pleasing freshness.

The challenge is that the opening screech never fully disappears for everyone. If you are sensitive to sharp top notes, that initial roughness may overshadow the beautiful spice heart you have to wait for. Vanité rewards endurance, but it refuses to be easy during those first few minutes.
