Our take

African Queen opens with a generous squirt of lemon that cuts straight through a slab of dark chocolate and almond paste, like cracking open a fancy chocolate box on a spring morning. The citrus flickers for a breath before the chocolate and nutty richness take over, pushing the fragrance into a sweet, almost gourmand territory. Then the florals arrive: jasmine and Bulgarian rose, but they are shy, quickly wrapped in a blanket of tonka bean and a whisper of patchouli that keeps everything creamy rather than earthy. This is a sweet, cozy scent with a gentle warmth, leaning synthetic in its candied chocolate heart but still pleasant in a dressed-down, niche-lite way. The longevity and sillage are frankly disappointing, barely three hours before it becomes a close skin scent, which is a shame because the opening is genuinely interesting. This fragrance feels like a warm hug from a friend who just made you hot cocoa, but then they have to leave early. It suits someone who loves gourmands but wants something softer than a full-bore vanilla bomb, and it works best for daytime in spring or fall when a little comfort is welcome. Skip it if you need presence across a crowded room or a scent that lasts through dinner.
