Our take

Bay Rum opens with lime and orange that provide a bright citrus introduction. The fruit is present and clear without leaning into a sharp synthetic edge. It moves quickly into the heart where allspice and bay leaf take over. The allspice brings a warm, peppery roundness while the bay leaf adds an herbal green tone that keeps the blend from becoming flat. The transition feels natural as the citrus steps back and the spices move forward.

The base introduces tobacco, cloves, and pepper. Tobacco adds a sweet, deep richness that anchors the composition. Cloves contribute a heavy, warm spice that sits close to the tobacco note. Pepper brings a dry, biting edge that cuts through the sweetness and prevents the base from feeling too heavy. The combination of these three notes creates a dry, spicy finish that stays consistent with the rest of the structure.

Composed by Will Claren and launched in 1978, this aromatic fougere carries fresh spicy, citrus, warm spicy, tobacco, and sweet accords throughout its wear. The lime and orange stay noticeable even as the spices build, and the tobacco continues to soften the sharper edges of the cloves and pepper while the bay leaf and allspice maintain their presence in the middle.
