Our take

Banana Republic’s Wildbloom opens with a squirt of guava and grapefruit so tart and fizzy it could pass for a tropical soda. The kumquat adds a bitter pith, the pear a slick sweetness. This citrus-fruit cocktail lasts about as long as it takes to drizzle over ice. Within minutes, the heart blooms into a dense, waxy bouquet of camellia and orchid, with hortensia lending a soapy crispness and champaca a honeyed depth. It feels like a chypre that forgot its green moss and instead rolled around in suede, sandalwood, and a whisper of oud that never fully commits. The drydown is a powdery, slightly musky skin scent that leans woody from patchouli and tonka, but it’s a ghost.

Wildbloom is a single, vivid snapshot: a woman clutching a handful of damp gardenia petals while her leather handbag sits on a park bench in the sun. It’s sweet and fresh in equal measure, more mainstream than niche, but the construction is clever for a mall release. Jean Claude Delville knew what he was doing. The problem is the numbers don’t lie. Longevity barely scratches two hours, sillage is a whisper even in the first spray. For spring and summer casual wear, say a picnic or an afternoon errand, it’s pleasant enough. But anyone who wants a fragrance to last past lunch should skip it entirely. If you love fleeting, pretty florals with a woody undercurrent and don’t mind reapplying, this is your lighthearted splurge. Otherwise, treat it as a sample to enjoy for an hour and move on.
