Chambre Noire
Fragrance notes
Character
Chambre Noire opens with a brisk pinch of pink pepper that immediately softens into a surprisingly fleshy plum, as if someone has just sliced the fruit over a smoldering censer. The heart is where Dorothée Piot’s hand shows itself: violet and papyrus tangle with a cool, churchly incense while jasmine adds a faint floral liquidity, but the leather is already creeping in from the base, raw and unsweetened. On drydown, sandalwood and patchouli give the leather a dusty backbone, and the vanilla here is not a fluffy gourmand but a dry, almost salty vanilla pod pressed into a wooden drawer. The overall character is a heavy, powdery cloak that smells like a darkroom where the chemical fixer has been replaced by hot wax and old saddle. It is squarely niche, leaning more natural than synthetic, though the sillage and longevity are modest this fragrance hovers close to the skin and fades after a few hours. Who should wear it? Someone who wants a leather scent that is not a biker jacket but a worn velvet armchair in an empty gallery, best worn in fall or winter, preferably at dusk. Who should skip it? Anyone looking for projection or a bold statement. This is a whisper, not a shout, and it knows its own quiet.
