Our take

Cecile Hua’s No. 40 can feel a little thin if you expect weight from an amber accord. The white amber here is pale and transparent, offering a soft glow without the resinous depth that usually anchors a scent. Cucumber and water mint lead the impression, cool and juicy in a way that reads like sliced vegetables resting in a bowl of iced water. Basil leaf adds a gentle bite, its green edges keeping the blend from turning purely watery. Driftwood sits underneath, dry and pale, more like sun-bleached planks than a dark forest floor. The result is ozonic and aromatic, a fresh spicy character that stays close to the skin without demanding attention.

You are standing on a wooden dock that stretches over a clear lake, the air warm and moving gently around you. Sunlight hits the water in quick flashes while mint and cucumber cool the air near your wrist. Basil drifts through the space between your hand and your face every time you move your arm. Pale wood warms under your feet and the amber hums faintly, a quiet heat that never overtakes the breeze. Someone nearby places a glass of cold water on the rail and the scents align for a moment, the garden and the lake meeting in the same breath before the wind shifts again and carries the mint further across the surface
