Our take

Mate is an unusual top note to build a leather fragrance around, and Irish Leather, composed by Alienor Massenet, leans into it, bitter and green next to juniper berry, pepper and mandarin before clary sage and iris soften the transition into the base.

Leather, cedarwood and vetiver take over from there, dry and full-bodied, more tanned hide than campfire despite the wood notes doing a lot of the work. It reads closer to a study of leather itself than a fragrance that merely gestures at it, animalic at the edges without turning sharp.

It stays put, settling into the leather and refusing to thin, and throw is contained, present for whoever stands beside you rather than the whole room.

Fall is when it makes the most sense, worn well whether the day calls for errands or dinner out, and it suits anyone who wants leather without sweetness or vanilla propping it up. Skin that runs dry may lose the mate note faster than skin that runs oily, but the finish holds steady: a saddle left in the cold, juniper berries crushed underfoot nearby.
