Our take

Stepping into a wood-panelled library as a late afternoon storm rattles the windows, the air feels cultivated and deeply plush. Zhor Milano’s Tonka Rouge lives entirely inside this specific, hushed atmosphere. It opens with a soft, nutty almond dusted with the slightly earthy, musky scent of ambrette seeds. It avoids a harsh, boozy start, feeling more like a fine, powdery cosmetic than a heavy dessert. As the moment settles, the heart of the fragrance reveals a beautifully crafted, gourmand floral blend. The bitter, hay-like warmth of the tonka bean is perfectly intertwined with creamy vanilla, while a delicate, dewy mixture of jasmine and rose adds a touch of classic, vintage elegance. It feels incredibly smooth and rounded, never sharp or screechy. The base of the scent is where the atmosphere truly deepens. It sits close to the skin with a rich, resinous warmth, as smooth sandalwood and sticky, amber-like labdanum are lifted by the clean, almost mineral dryness of ambroxan. It creates a very inviting, balsamic aura that feels expensive and cozy. The primary limitation here is the rose; it is a very clean, somewhat synthetic petal that can occasionally feel a bit detached from the otherwise natural, gourmand warmth of the vanilla and tonka.
