Our take

Boadicea the Victorious’s Back to Paradise opens with a dizzying slap of honeyed pineapple and green violet leaf, a tropical cocktail that’s more artificial poolside umbrella than genuine island breeze. The ylang-ylang and bergamot don’t lighten it; they double down on a syrupy, almost candied sweetness that feels dragged from a 2015 summer blockbuster rather than a niche perfumer’s imagination. Give it ten minutes, though, and the magnolia and jasmine sambac wrestle the fruit into something softer, powdery and benzoin-laced, with a warm amber vanilla base that clings like a second skin. The longevity is undeniable at 4.51, and the sillage hovers near a four, but that persistence can become a burden: the honey note never fully retreats, and on humid spring or sweltering summer days, it turns cloying rather than radiant.

The overall impression is of a sticky fruit punch spilled on white linen and left to dry in direct sun, shimmering but stained. It feels synthetic in its opening yet wears more natural in the dry down, a strange split personality that lands somewhere between mainstream floral and earnest niche ambition. Those who adore sugary, honeyed florals with a tropical undertow will find their bliss here. Anyone who prefers crisp, green, or airy compositions should skip it unless they enjoy feeling wrapped in a sweet, oppressive blanket. Best deployed on a summer evening outdoors, where the warmth can breathe a little, or on a spring date when you want your presence remembered without apology.
