Our take

Bergamotto opens with a precise, almost medicinal blast of Calabrian bergamot, the rind squeezed so tight you catch the bitter pith alongside a flicker of cardamom’s green warmth. The bitter orange slices through any sweetness, keeping everything taut and bright. Then, almost apologetically, the white musk slides in to soften the edges, leaving a clean, barely-there whisper on skin. This is a splash of cold mineral water on a sun-warmed wrist, refreshing for exactly as long as it takes the droplets to evaporate. Jean-Claude Ellena’s hand is evident in the transparent, airy construction, which feels natural and deliberately underbuilt rather than raw or synthetic. But here’s the rub: with a longevity of 1.99 and sillage barely grazing 1.83, this is a fragrance that performs like a polite nod from across a crowded room. You pay for the opening, and then you pay again and again. It is a straight-up summer scent, ideal for scorching days when anything heavy would cloy, and best suited for casual weekends or a quick spritz before a cold shower. Those who demand presence or a lingering trail should skip it entirely. Does a fleeting burst of citrus and musk, masterfully composed yet vanishing within the hour, earn its keep? For a very specific kind of minimalist who loves the ritual of reapplication, perhaps. For everyone else, it is a beautiful, disposable poetry.
