Our take

Chypre du Nord opens with a brisk citrus duo that feels less like a sunburst and more like the sharp, cold light of a northern morning. Bergamot and orange peel are quickly checked by a faintly furry peach note that never tips into jammy sweetness, while nutmeg adds a dusty, aromatic warmth. The heart is not a fruit compote but a careful balancing act, a whisper of stone fruit over spice.

As it settles, the real character emerges. This is a Chypre built on a foundation of dense, wet oakmoss and a birch tar that imparts a leathery, almost medicinal smokiness, like a birch forest after autumn rain. Natural musk and cedar give it a animalic, dry texture, while benzoin and tonka bean soften the edges without fully smoothing them. The overall effect is that of an abandoned hunting lodge, with damp wood, scattered orange rinds, and the lingering ghost of a leather coat.

It feels thoroughly natural and niche, heavy in presence but not cloying, with a powdery undertone that prevents it from becoming too rough. The sillage is moderate, hovering close to the skin after an hour, and longevity is solid but not exceptional, around six hours. This is a perfect companion for cool, overcast days, especially in fall or winter, and it works equally well in the boardroom or a quiet evening walk. It suits someone who appreciates earthy complexity and resists the urge to shout. If you prefer bright citruses or fresh aquatics, this dark, mossy floor is not for you.
