Moss Cologne opens with a bright citrus trio sweet orange, grapefruit, bergamot and lemon that feel like sunlight hitting a damp forest floor. But the cheer is short lived. Within minutes, the oakmoss asserts itself not the dusty, scratchy kind but a lush, living green that wraps around a creamy champaca and violet leaf. The heart blooms with a soft spice from nutmeg and a whisper of jasmine and ylang ylang that never tips into loud floral territory. On the dry down, the base layers oakmoss with labdanum and ambergris, giving a subtle animalic warmth, while cedar and tonka bean add a dry, faintly sweet woody frame.
The overall character is that of a mossy stone wall in a botanical garden, cracked but thriving with tiny ferns and bitter orange peel scattered at its base. This is a natural feeling composition from Bortnikoff, leaning niche in its refusal to overpolish. The sweetness is restrained, more herbal than sugary, and the freshness is damp rather than aquatic.
