Our take

This is an oud that doesn’t arrive like a dark tempest. It instead slips in through the side door, trailing a burst of grapefruit and bergamot that sparkles like citrus juice in morning light, with cardamom adding a gentle, dusty warmth. The heart blooms into a creamy swirl of frangipani and magnolia, a tropical white floral that feels almost lactonic and soft as flesh, while jasmine sambac adds a lush, slightly indolic whisper. But the base is where Bortnikoff’s hand becomes clear: the agarwood is present, but it’s a shy oud, a shy deer peeking from behind a cedar tree, its skin clad in a resinous labdanum cloak that turns the whole composition into a warm, woody hug rather than a smoky assault.

The overall character is that of a sheer silk sarong draped over sun-warmed wood — feminine and masculine in equal measure, natural and refined, with no synthetic edges to speak of. And yet, for all its beauty, the sillage hovers close, barely a whisper after an hour, and longevity clocks in at a modest five or six hours before it fades into a ghost of cedar. This is a summer dress of a fragrance, perfect for a spring brunch or a balmy evening where you want to feel elevated but not announced. Who should skip? Those who crave a beast-mode oud that stains the room. Who should wear it? Anyone who wants their oud to feel like a vacation, not a ritual.
