psy-cou opens with a brisk slap of cardamom and juniper, green and peppery, before the palo santo sweeps in like a church door swinging shut. Frank Voelkl built this as a study in contrasts: the incense is dry and smoldering, the saffron honeyed and metallic, while coumarin and vanilla wrap everything in a sweet, almost medicinal powder. The coffee note arrives late, roasted and bitter, dragging the agarwood into a woody base that feels less like luxury and more like a worn leather armchair in a dim corner cafe. This is the scent of a man or woman who reads too much and talks too little, someone who recites poetry under their breath on a cold train platform. The overall character is a quiet fire, all warm spice and balsamic haze, but it burns low: sillage barely whispers past an arm’s length, and longevity fades after four hours. That intimacy makes it a wardrobe rebel for fall and winter, best worn on a gray afternoon when you want a companion rather than a statement. If you crave projection, skip it.
