Our take

Bora Bora by Liz Claiborne opens like a sudden tropical downpour that forgets to bring the thunder. Calice Becker’s 2002 creation splashes water lily and mandarin orange across a gauzy iris veil, all bright and politely dewy. The heart turns syrupy in that familiar late-90s department store way: tuberose and orange blossom wrestle with a clean orchid, while jasmine adds a faint indolic whisper that never gets properly dirty. This is a white floral bouquet arranged by someone who prefers the petals pressed flat and powdered.

The drydown reveals ginger and sandalwood, but they’re barely audible backstage guests. The whole affair feels like a bottle of sunscreen that smells more like the lotion than the sea. It’s a single clear note repeated on a cheap keyboard: fresh, powdery, aquatic, with a citrus top note that evaporates before you finish spritzing. Longevity sits at a shrug-worthy 3.18, and sillage barely makes it across a small room. If you want a perfume that announces your arrival, this one mumbles a greeting instead.

Who is this for? Someone who wants to smell like the idea of a vacation without actually going anywhere. It suits breezy spring afternoons and hot summer days when any heavier floral would wilt. Skip it if you crave depth, projection, or anything that challenges a normcore imagination. It’s a perfectly pleasant mainstream floral for the office or brunch, but for a true tropical escape, you’d be better off buying a plane ticket and letting the ocean do the talking.
