Our take

Portinari is a time capsule from 1998, a woody aromatic that opens with a bitter citrus snap, tangerine and bergamot braced by cypress’s cathedral green. It quickly turns dense and herbal, a heart cluttered with cloves, lavender, basil, caraway, coriander, vetiver, geranium, sandalwood, patchouli, all jostling for attention like colleagues in an overheated conference room. The base pulls it together with vanilla, amber, tonka, and musk into a powdery, sweet warmth that feels more synthetic than natural, more mainstream than niche.

This is a fragrance that sits close to the skin, sillage barely registering beyond a whisper, and longevity fades within three hours. It’s best in spring or fall, comfortable at the office or a daytime date, but it lacks the depth to carry a winter night. The overall character reminds me of an old leather armchair that smells faintly of dust and someone else’s aftershave, comfortable but not memorable. Who should wear it? Someone who wants a soft, polite, aromatic vanilla without surprising anyone. Who should skip it? Anyone expecting projection, longevity, or a modern twist. It’s a competent relic, pleasant enough, but it won’t leave a mark.
