Our take

Incenso skips the usual bright, sunny citrus opening and replaces it with something far more herbal and shaded. The lime and lemon are present, but they are quickly overshadowed by the sharp, medicinal bite of coriander and caraway. It feels less like a refreshing drink and more like a dry, aromatic tonic. This pungent, slightly bitter greenness gives the fragrance a distinctly old-school masculine character right from the start, steering clear of anything that could be considered sweet or tropical.

As the scent settles, the heart notes introduce a dusty, ground-pepper heat. The vetiver adds a muddy, root-like earthiness that anchors the lighter citrus notes, while the elemi provides a resinous, almost lemony pine quality. The incense here is not the heavy, church-like smoke found in many winter fragrances. Instead, it is a clean, dry resin that mingles with the black pepper to create a texture that is simultaneously rough and refined. It is a transparent smoke, allowing the other spices to breathe rather than suffocating them.

The transition to the base reveals a warmer, woodier foundation. The cedar is dry and pencil-shaving sharp, providing a sturdy backbone for the remaining spice. Cardamom lends a slightly cooling, camphoraceous lift that prevents the cedar from becoming too flat or lumberyard-like. The balsamic and amber accords are subtle presences, offering a hint of resinous warmth without turning the composition sweet. It remains a predominantly dry and spicy affair, suitable for someone who prefers their woods unvarnished and their spices unapologetic.

This is a scent for the person who finds most modern citrus fragrances too sweet or synthetic. It demands a tolerance for pungent herbs and dry, dusty textures. It is not a crowd-pleaser in the commercial sense, but it offers a specific, niche-adjacent mood that feels both intellectual and grounded. You are standing in a sunlit stone courtyard surrounded by terracotta pots of wild fennel and dry, cracked earth.
