Griffin

The door to the woodshop is open and the air inside is thick with curls of cedar shavings on the floor. Someone has just lit a small bundle of frankincense in the corner to clear the space, and the grey smoke drifts across the room to meet the fresh sawdust. Black pepper sits in an open jar on the workbench, sharp and bright against the heavier scent of resin that has dried into the grain of the table. A strip of leather hangs from a hook near the window, warmed by the sun, and the licorice root stored in a tin on the shelf releases a cool, sweet anise note every time the lid is lifted.

Cypress boughs lean against the wall, their clean green scent threading through the darker materials that dominate the room. The vetiver roots in a basket by the door add an earthy, rooty depth that pulls the entire atmosphere downward, anchoring the air to the wooden planks. It is a space defined by smoke and leather, where the sweetness of anise never becomes a dessert but instead stays dry and herbal. The resins coat the inside of the nose with a soft spice that feels ancient, as if the materials have been gathered here for a long time and the air has simply absorbed them.

The smoke curls around the cedar beams and the frankincense continues to smolder near the scattered shavings, mixing with the dark, worn leather of the apron left on the chair.
