Our take

Catherine Selig built a fragrance that smells like a department store counter from two decades ago trying to act modern. The bitter orange and mint open with a sharp, synthetic bite that feels more like a cleaning product than a citrus grove. White pepper adds a prickly heat that clashes with the lavender rather than supporting it. This is not a smooth composition. The heart pushes a powdery herbal mix that reads as dated, and the sage carries a dusty, dry edge that does not lift the weight of the spices. It attempts a crisp, aromatic profile but lands in a territory that feels stiff and overly formal. The synthetic sheen on the top notes never quite disappears, leaving a chemical film over the natural herbs.

The base reveals the real issue. The suede and white amber promise a rich, masculine finish, but the white woods arrive with a hollow, thin dryness that undermines the texture. Instead of a warm, grounded leather, the drydown feels flat and slightly plastic. It lacks the depth required to carry the spicy opening into a satisfying conclusion. The musky accord sits on the surface without merging the notes together, resulting in a scent that feels disjointed from start to finish. For a fragrance named Monarch, it rules with a heavy hand but offers very little actual richness or complexity to justify the regal title.
