The island breeze that comes off the Aegean at noon carries the exact scent of Maria Christofilis’s Mykonos12. It is a fragrance that refuses to be anything other than bright and piercingly green. Galbanum leads the charge here, sharp and resinous, immediately joined by the clean, medicinal quality of thyme and the electric punch of bergamot. This is not a soft, pretty floral. It is an herbal composition that feels distinctly unmanicured, capturing the wild, scrubby vegetation that grows right up to the edge of the sea. There is a distinct earthiness to it, but it never feels heavy or dark.
Tuscan iris and jasmine provide the floral heart, but they are rendered in a cool, powdery, slightly bitter style. Neroli adds a bright, orange-blossom highlight that keeps the scent tethered to the coast. The complexity comes from the oakmoss, which lends a dry, bark-like texture that stops the white florals from becoming too sweet or cloying. It is an aromatic and woody blend that smells of salt, sun, and parched earth. The overall effect is sophisticated and distinctly Mediterranean, evoking a landscape of rocky cliffs and wild greenery rather than a manicured garden.
While the balsamic and mossy accords give it some needed weight, the synthetic edge in the citrus can feel a bit thin on the skin.
