Our take

Eau de Trianon can feel crowded. The opening hits with galbanum and bergamot, Amalfi lemon and African orange flower all at once, and the green brightness is so dense that the citrus barely gets a clear word in. That rush continues into the heart, where jasmine, orris, violet leaf, rose and tuberose pile up without much space between them. The white floral accord is rich and heavy, and the orris adds a powdery softness that sometimes sits awkwardly against the sharp leaves. It is a beautiful mess, but a mess nonetheless, and anyone who prefers a scent that unfolds in neat stages will find it overwhelming.

Still, there is a reason to stay with it. The base brings amber, benzoin, Virginia cedar and vanilla together into a warm, resinous finish that smells like sunlight on a garden path after a rain, the air fresh and the petals damp. It suits a morning walk through a greenhouse or a bright afternoon on a porch, when the world feels clean and full of growth. The ozonic and aquatic touches keep it from turning cloying, and the aromatic edge gives it a calm, natural posture. It is composed by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. The final impression is a gentle amber.
