Character
The morning glaze is still on the tiles when the garden wall finally drops its shadow across the pool. You are sitting on the coping with your ankles in the water, the air already warm but not yet heavy, a towel balled under one elbow. Someone has left a half-peeled grapefruit on the rim of the next lounger and the rind is already releasing its oil into the heat. The opening arrives exactly there. Cassis and green apple sharpen the citrus so it reads more like fruit than juice, and the papyrus does not behave like a dry spice here. It smells of the hollow, slightly sour green of a fresh reed, a stem snapped clean. Neroli and violet leaf drift up as the air moves, the orchid smoothing the edges so the florals never announce themselves as a bouquet. It stays close to skin temperature, resinous and clean, the tonka bean and amber lending a soft, pale gold warmth that never tips into dessert. The musk sits low, more a texture than a note, keeping the whole thing buoyant rather than clingy. You push off the edge and let the water close over your shoulders, the scent now a faint, cooling layer against the heat. Behind the hedge a hose ticks as it expands in the sun and the wet, crushed stalk of a weed smells exactly like this.
