Our take

Ilaya opens with a bright, almost abrasive flicker of cardamom and ginger, a sharp freshness that feels more like resinous bite than kitchen spice. That initial jolt quickly softens into a creamy, heady embrace of ylang-ylang and jasmine, but these yellow florals never get dewy or innocent. They are draped in incense and benzoin from the start, so the heart already wears the weight of the base like a shroud. The drydown is where it truly settles: coffee meets myrrh and more incense, turning into a smoky, balsamic amber that is sweet but not gourmand, more like dark roasted beans left near a censer. The whole composition feels like a velvet cloak lined with singed silk.

This is a niche-leaning oriental woody that wears its smokiness like a second skin. It is dense and heavy, and while the notes are mostly natural-feeling, there is a synthetic smoothness to the benzoin that keeps it from being too raw. At longevity of 3.28 and sillage around 3.13, it sits close, fading into a warm, skin-hugging haze after three hours. That is its weakness: it becomes a whisper when you want it to linger as a growl.

Whom does it suit? A woman who prefers her sweetness tempered with ash, who wants to smell contemplative and layered, not like a bakery or a bouquet. Skip if you need projection or if coffee notes turn to burnt sugar on your skin. Wear it for a winter evening, a quiet dinner, or when you want your fragrance to feel like a secret only the collar of your coat knows.
