Someone is peeling a lemon near the open kitchen door, the bright rind joining the heavier scent of orange and bergamot that hangs in the air. Jasmine and orchid drift through the space, soft and slightly powdery, catching on the sleeves of a wool coat that still holds the dry chill of a morning walk. Vanilla and amber settle into the fabric, warm but not heavy, while musk and patchouli ground the flowers so they never float too far from the ground. A breeze moves through the narrow path between the buildings and carries the citrus forward again, sharp against the fading floral air, then pulls it back just as quickly.
The stone underfoot holds a faint heat from the afternoon sun, though the air has already begun to turn. A hand brushes against the rough wall and disturbs a cluster of petals, sending a fresh wave of bougainvillea into the mix. The vanilla deepens near the skin, amber glowing quietly beside it, while the lemon and orange keep returning in small flashes that cut through the sweetness. Patchouli adds a dry edge to the musk, keeping the whole scene from feeling too soft. Someone pauses to adjust a scarf, and the movement releases another layer of jasmine and orchid into the cooling air, the citrus still bright at the edges, the amber and vanilla wrapping around the stems and leaves like a second
