Our take

French Cancan opens with a slap of violet and lilac, all powdery and slightly jammy, jasmine lurking underneath like a petticoat rustle. It’s a 1936 floral that refuses to whisper. The heart is a dense bouquet of rose and orange flower, iris giving it that cold, cosmetic feel, while a tiny grit of patchouli and earthy lily-of-the-valley keep it from floating away entirely. The drydown settles into a soft, mossy amber with sandalwood and orris root that is less dance hall than dressing room, the scent clinging to a velvet coat left on a chair.

The overall character is a beautifully dated powder puff, one that’s been lightly dusted with oakmoss and pressed into a wooden compact. It’s floral, powdery, and unapologetically feminine, leaning natural in its components but feeling like a vintage artifact rather than a modern blend. The longevity is moderate, around four to five hours, and sillage hovers close after the first burst, which is a shame given the opening’s promise. Who would actually wear this? Someone who loves the austerity of iris, who wants a floral that talks about soap and cigarettes and old rose gardens, not candy. Skip if you need a beast or prefer fresh, aquatic florals. Wear it for a rainy autumn afternoon, or a winter evening when you want to feel like a black-and-white photograph, all soft focus and missing edges. Is there a better fragrance for pretending you’re in a Parisian dressing room in 1936 without actually smelling like mothballs? Not quite.
